Everybody thinks they're ready for an outage until the power actually drops. Then it's phone flashlight, dying battery, and a drawer full of alkaline AAs that leaked sometime in 2019. A blackout isn't a lumens problem — it's a runtime and logistics problem, and those are two very different things to shop for.
Here's how we'd actually build a kit, and why the light you EDC is only one third of the answer.
A blackout kit has three jobs, not one
Most people buy one flashlight and call it an emergency plan. That fails because an outage asks for three different kinds of light:
- Area light — you need a room lit so people can eat, read, and not trip on the dog. A beam pointed at the ceiling is a bad lantern.
- Task light — a handheld you carry to the breaker panel, the crawlspace, the water heater. This is where a real flashlight earns its keep.
- Power — the part everybody skips. Day one is easy. Day three is a battery question.
Cover all three and a 12-hour outage is a non-event. Cover one and you're rationing your phone.
Job 1: Area light — get a real lantern
Standing a flashlight on its tail and bouncing it off the ceiling works, technically. It also burns your best light on the least demanding job and gives you harsh, uneven glare.
A dedicated lantern is worth the shelf space. The Fenix CL22R is the one we point people to: 500 lumens of diffused light, USB-C rechargeable, compact enough to live in a kitchen drawer instead of the garage. Run it on a low or medium setting and it lights a room for a long stretch instead of blasting max output for an hour.
Rule of thumb for area light: you want the lowest output that makes the room usable. Nobody needs 500 lumens to play cards. Most lanterns will run several times longer on a mid mode, and in an outage runtime beats brightness every single time.
Job 2: Task light — pick a platform, not a spec sheet
This is where the flashlight-nerd advice actually pays off. For outage duty, skip the 8000-lumen turbo monster. What you want is a light on a swappable cell platform — 18650 or 21700 — so that when the battery dies, you drop in a fresh one and keep working.
That's the real argument for something like a Convoy S2+ in the emergency box. It's inexpensive, it's simple, it takes a standard 18650, and it has a genuinely usable low mode. Buy three spare cells and you have a light that runs for days, not hours. Compare that to a sealed built-in-battery light: when it's empty, it's a paperweight until you find a USB port.
If you'd rather have built-in charging, that's fine — just make sure the cell is still removable. A lot of modern lights split the difference: USB-C charging on the body, standard 18650 or 21700 inside. That's the best of both worlds for outage use, and it's the layout we recommend most often.
What to actually look for in a task light:
- A real moonlight or low mode. Sub-10 lumens will get you around a dark house all night. Turbo will not.
- Removable cells. Non-negotiable for multi-day outages.
- Simple UI. If you have to remember a click pattern under stress, it's the wrong light. Handing it to a family member should be obvious.
- Flood over throw. A tight thrower is great for spotting deer at 300 yards, lousy for reading a breaker label at arm's length.
Job 3: Power — the part that decides how long you last
This is the difference between a kit and a gadget. Two things matter: spare cells, and a way to charge them without wall power.
Charger/power bank combos do double duty here. That's a genuinely useful loop when the grid is down.

The mistake almost everyone makes
Storing a kit and never touching it again.
Lithium-ion cells don't like sitting at 100% for a year, and they really don't like sitting at 0%. Store spares around 50–60% charge in a cool spot, in a plastic case — never loose in a drawer where they can short against keys or coins. Then check them twice a year. Put it on the same schedule as your smoke detector batteries and you'll never think about it again.
Same goes for alkalines: if you're keeping any AA or AAA lights in the kit, pull the cells out during storage. Leaked alkaline has killed more emergency flashlights than any other cause we see.
What we'd put in the box
A kit that handles a multi-day outage without drama:
- One rechargeable lantern for area light
- One 18650 or 21700 handheld with a good low mode
- Three or four spare cells in a case
- One charger/power bank that runs off USB
- A small keychain light so there's always something in your pocket
That's it. No generator, no $400 power station, no prepper bunker. Five items, most of them under $50, and you've covered light and power for the realistic version of the problem.
Test it before you need it
Once a year, kill the breaker for an hour on purpose. You'll find out fast whether your batteries are dead, whether anyone else in the house knows where the kit lives, and whether that light you bought three years ago still works.
Prep that hasn't been tested is just shopping. Ten minutes of checking beats a night of guessing.
