18350 Flashlights: How to Shrink Your EDC Without Losing the Punch

There's a point in every flashlight habit where the question stops being "how bright can it get" and starts being "how little can I get away with carrying." That's where the 18350 lives.

It's the least understood cell format we sell, and it's also the one that changes how a light carries more than any other single upgrade. Here's what it actually does, what it costs you, and how to tell if it belongs in your pocket.

What an 18350 actually is

The naming convention is just dimensions in millimeters. An 18650 is 18mm wide and 65mm long. An 18350 is the same 18mm diameter — but only 35mm long. Same width, roughly half the height.

That's the whole idea. Because the diameter matches, an 18350 drops into the same tube bore as an 18650. The only thing standing between you and a much shorter flashlight is about 30mm of empty aluminum.

Capacity scales the way you'd expect. A good 18650 holds somewhere around 3000mAh. A good 18350 — like the Vapcell A11 we stock — holds about 1100mAh. Call it a third of the fuel in a bit over half the length.

The tube swap: the best $15 mod in EDC

Here's the part most people don't realize. On a lot of lights, you don't buy a whole new flashlight to run 18350 — you buy a shorter body tube and swap it.

The Convoy S2+ 18350 short tube is the classic example. Unscrew the head and tail off your existing S2+, thread them onto the short tube, drop in an 18350, and you've turned a normal-sized EDC light into something that genuinely disappears in a pocket. Two minutes, no tools, fully reversible. Keep the long tube in a drawer and swap back whenever you want the runtime.

It's not just the S2+. There's a C8+ short tube as well, which is a stranger and more entertaining animal — a full-size thrower head sitting on a stubby little body. It looks ridiculous. It also throws a serious beam from something that fits in a jacket pocket.

If you've already got a Convoy, this is the cheapest meaningful change you can make to how it carries. The tubes come in the same finishes as the hosts — brass, copper, titanium, MAO — so you can match a light you already own or deliberately mismatch it, which honestly looks great.

What you give up

No free lunch. Three real tradeoffs:

Runtime drops hard. A third of the capacity means roughly a third of the runtime at the same output. If your S2+ ran two hours on medium with an 18650, budget closer to forty minutes on an 18350. For a light that lives in your pocket and gets used in ninety-second bursts, that's a non-issue. For a light you need running continuously, it's disqualifying.

Sustained output can sag. Smaller cell, less thermal mass, less surface area to dump heat. Some 18350 setups will hold turbo for a shorter stretch before stepping down. You'll usually notice this as the light getting hot in your hand faster than the bigger version did.

Not every driver is happy about it. Most Convoy drivers handle both formats without complaint, but high-drain modes ask a lot of a small cell. Which brings us to the part people get wrong.

Buy the right cell, not the cheapest one

18350s are where bad batteries do the most damage, because the amp draw doesn't shrink just because the cell did. A driver pulling 3A doesn't care that you fed it a small battery — it's going to pull 3A anyway.

Two things to check before you buy:

  • Continuous discharge rating. Look for something rated 10A or better. That Vapcell A11 is a 10A cell, which is why it's the one we keep in stock instead of the no-name 1200mAh claims floating around.
  • Flat top vs. button top. This trips up more people than anything else. Some lights need the little raised nub to make contact; others are fine with a flat cell. If yours needs a button top and you've got flat tops, a battery spacer sorts it out for a couple dollars — we keep those in the Convoy accessories section.

Ignore capacity claims over about 1200mAh on an 18350. The chemistry doesn't support it. If a listing says 2000mAh, it's fiction.

Purpose-built 18350 lights

Not everything 18350 is a mod. Some lights are designed around the format from the start, and they tend to be the best argument for it.

Both charge over USB-C directly, which sidesteps the "do I own a charger" question entirely. So should you run one?

Yes, if your light is mostly a "find the keyhole, check under the sink, walk the dog" tool. Short bursts, frequent use, pocket carry. The runtime hit is theoretical and the size difference is something you feel every single day.

No, if the light is your only light, lives in a pack for emergencies, or gets used for long continuous work. Then you want the fuel. Our standard S2+ on an 18650 is the better call, and it isn't close.

The honest answer for most people: own both tubes. They're cheap, the swap takes two minutes, and you get to decide each morning which problem you're solving. That flexibility is the actual reason the format has stuck around — not because it's better, but because it's a different shape of the same light.

Start with a tube, a decent cell, and one weekend of carrying it short. You'll know by Sunday which one is going back on.
