Search "tactical flashlight" and you'll get a wall of black anodized tubes with aggressive names, crenulated bezels, and lumen numbers that look like phone numbers. Most of that is marketing. A light doesn't become tactical because it has a strike bezel and the word "warrior" on the box.
Tactical means one thing: the light does exactly what you tell it to, instantly, under stress, with one hand, and it doesn't quit when you need it. Everything else is decoration. Here's how to actually pick one.
The four things that make a light tactical
1. A forward clicky tail switch
This is the single biggest dividing line. A forward clicky gives you momentary-on: press halfway, the light comes on, release and it's off. Press all the way and it clicks into constant-on. A reverse clicky makes you click fully on and fully off — no momentary, no quick signaling, no light discipline.
If you're clearing a dark building, checking a noise in the yard, or working a scene where you don't want to leave the light on any longer than necessary, momentary is the whole game. A side switch buried behind three menu presses is not a tactical interface. It's a lifestyle interface.
2. Instant high, and a way to skip the mode cycle
The correct behavior when you press the button is: full output, right now. Not moonlight, not "last used mode," not a strobe you have to tap past. Some lights do this with a dedicated dual-switch layout — a tail switch for on/off and a side switch for modes. Others use a two-stage tail switch. Either works. What doesn't work is a light that starts on 1 lumen and needs four taps to get to 1,500.
3. Candela, not just lumens
Lumens is total light output. Candela is intensity down the beam — it's what tells you how far the light actually reaches. A 2,500-lumen light with a wide flood beam might throw 150 meters. A 1,600-lumen light with a tight reflector can throw 700+.
For indoor and close work, flood wins — you want to fill a room, not paint a spot on the far wall. For yard, perimeter, and outdoor work, throw wins. Manufacturers list both if they're honest. 4. It runs on a cell you can replace
A sealed light with a built-in battery is fine for EDC. For duty use it's a liability. When the cell degrades in two years, you throw the light away. A light that takes a standard standard 18650 or 21700 cell lets you carry a spare, swap in the dark, and keep the light in service for a decade.
Bonus: high-output tactical lights pull serious current. Not every cell can feed them. A high-drain cell like a Molicel P42A or Samsung 40T is built for it; a 6,000mAh "ultra capacity" cell usually isn't. If your light sags to half output after thirty seconds, the cell is often the culprit, not the light.
Three real options, and who each one is for
The duty-grade workhorse: SPERAS EST MAX

What to ignore
Strobe. It's on nearly every tactical light and it's near-useless in practice. It disorients you as much as anyone else in a confined space, and buried in the mode cycle it's a liability. If your light has it, learn how to avoid triggering it accidentally. That's the whole skill.
Strike bezels. A crenulated bezel is a glass protector that also happens to be pointy. It's not a weapon. It does keep your lens off the concrete when you set the light down face-first, which is worth something.
Lumen ceilings. A light that hits 6,500 lumens for 45 seconds before stepping down to 900 is a 900-lumen light with a good headline. Read the sustained output number, not the turbo number.
Making a light you already own more tactical

The short version
Buy the interface first, the output second. A 1,000-lumen light with a forward clicky, instant high, and a swappable cell will out-perform a 5,000-lumen light with a side-switch menu every single time it matters. Match the beam to your working distance, feed it a high-drain cell, and carry a spare.
