14500 vs AA: The Battery Guide Every Dual-Voltage EDC Flashlight Owner Needs

If you own a Convoy T7 or T3 Copper, you've probably noticed something odd on the spec sheet: "AA/14500." Two battery types, same slot, same flashlight. That's not a typo, and it's not interchangeable in the way most people assume. Drop the wrong cell in the wrong light and you're looking at anything from disappointing output to a genuinely bad day. Get it right, and you've got one flashlight that quietly does the job of two.

Here's what's actually going on, and how to use it without frying anything.

Same Size, Completely Different Battery

A standard AA is an alkaline (or NiMH) cell putting out 1.5 volts nominal. A 14500 is a lithium-ion cell built in the exact same physical dimensions as an AA — same diameter, same length — but running at 3.7 volts nominal, more than double the pressure behind the electrons. They fit the same tube. They are not the same battery.

That voltage gap is the whole story. A flashlight driver built only for AA input can get overwhelmed by a raw 3.7V lithium cell — best case it just runs hot and short-lived, worst case you damage the driver or the cell. This is why "AA/14500" is a specific rating, not a marketing footnote. Lights like the Convoy T7 and T3 Copper are built with drivers that handle both voltages safely. A light that only says "AA" is not.

Why You'd Bother With 14500 At All

The upside is real: swap an alkaline AA for a 14500 in a dual-voltage light and output jumps noticeably, because the driver suddenly has more than double the voltage headroom to work with. This is the part most people miss. A raw 14500 lithium cell puts out 3.7V — great in a dual-voltage light, potentially damaging in a device that only expects a 1.5V AA. How to Actually Run a Convoy T7 or T3 Copper

Grab-and-go, low stakes, whatever's on hand: a standard alkaline or NiMH AA works fine. Lower output, but zero compatibility worries, and you can restock at any gas station.

Everyday carry, want the light to actually perform: run a true 14500 like the H10 for the voltage bump, and keep a spare charged. This is where these lights earn the "AA/14500" label — they're genuinely a different flashlight on lithium.
